The North American Hydroseeding Contractors Directory

Where you will find the largest list of hydroseed contractors in the U.S.A. and Canada.

Should you hire a hydroseed contractor or try and hydroseed yourself? Not only are there technical aspects that you do not have experience with, but there is a lot of special equipment that must be used that you likely do not own. It is usually best to hire hydroseeding contractors.

Since this process has become very popular in the United States recently, there are many hydroseeding contractors that are available for hire all over the place. There are many companies that can be found in almost every State.

Not only will you not have to worry about applying the hydroseed yourself, but a good contractor should do some other great things like – customizing the seed and nutrient mix so it fits your particular weather conditions the best, use a tested mix that has been proven to work, and he should be able to show you some great results within one week. If you are not able to see results from the process after one week, there is a good chance that your hydroseeding contractors did not customize your seed mix.

Lawns are not the only place that you can use this process. Often times, companies are hired to perform the process in parks, construction sites, golf courses, and even sports fields. The process works in so many places because it uses real grass seeds and creates the perfect environment for those seeds to grow, no matter what the soil is like below it. It’s chosen by many people because it is much less costly than hiring a company to lay sod. Even a quality company can almost never guarantee that your lawn will match with the sod. But hydroseeding can grow grass almost anywhere.

It is safest not to attempt to perform the process by yourself. Look on the internet and locate reputable hydroseed contractors that are located in your State or Province.

To find a hydroseeding contractor near you, check out the North American Hydroseeding Contractors Directory, the largest database of hydroseeding contractors in North America.

Hydroseeding has already proven itself as an innovative, versatile and effective solution in many erosion control and bank stabilisation applications. This continues to be the case in the restoration of landfill sites, where hydroseeding techniques can be adapted to stabilise degraded landfill caps and surrounding banks.

Hydroseeding plays an important role in the restoration of failing landfill caps; instances of poorly capped landfills are not uncommon and in some cases this can leave waste exposed near to the surface. The solution requires remedial re grading and capping followed by a specialist hydroseeding application to stabilise the final soil layer.

Laporte landfill has been one such site where hydroseeding and other remedial works have been necessary. The landfill owners have introduced a ‘Safer Slopes’ initiative and have taken action to stabilise slopes and make these areas more safe.

Laporte Landfill has been improved many times over the past few years and over several phases. The sites original poor cap left waste exposed at the surface.

During Phase 1, owners stabilised the capped area using specially tailored grass seed mixes to thrive in such a nutrient poor environment. The outer slopes and perimeter ditches were seeded using hydroseeding techniques as well as being treated with Bonded Fibre Matrix to support the seed and establish the grasses on very steep, solid clay formations.

Phase 2 of the Laporte ‘Safer Slopes’ scheme required the grading of original, near vertical slopes followed by additional hydroseeding through an erosion control membrane.

The membrane itself was reinforced with steel and woven fibres, to stabilise the soils which left hydroseeding contractors and owners with the final challenge of getting the hydroseeding mixture through the membrane without damaging the seed.

The hydroseeding contractors adopted a technique, specifically designed to hydroseed through the erosion control membrane on site. This required the bespoke manufacture of specific hose adapters to enable the slurry to be forced through the tightly woven mats, without causing seed damage.

Along with the hydroseeding nozzle adaptations, contractors also had to adopt a new seeding technique to optimise the seed contact with the soil, maximising germination and establishment of the grasses.

Hydroseeding techniques and new hydraulically applied product innovations continue to provide compelling and ground breaking results. Hydroseeding not only outperforms other erosion control systems, its ability to offer labour and time efficiency savings means it also delivers significant cost saving over traditional methods.

Hydroseeding has already revolutionised the erosion control sector and with new innovations in the pipeline there is more still to come.

For many hydroseeding contractors and erosion control specialists the development of Flexible Growth Mediums could just be the next big innovation; hydroseeding contractors can now hydraulically apply an erosion control solution that outstrips the performance of other techniques, offering superior results whilst achieving major labour savings.

FGM’s are at the cutting edge of soil erosion technology, bettering the performance of high quality Bonded Fire Matrix products and erosion control blankets. This has strengthened the position of specialist hydroseeding contractors in the soil erosion marketplace, who can now use the hydroseeding equipment they already own to carry out market leading erosion control works.

For hydroseeding contractors and clients the major benefits of this new technique include.

• Effective application-bonds directly to the soil
• Stellar erosion control-99% effective in major testing laboratories
• rapid turf establishment-vegetation can grow eight times faster than bare soil and twice as fast as blankets
• Quicker to lay and lower installed costs than blankets
• Seduced soil preparation required
• Safe for wildlife-no nets, threads or staples to snare wildlife or become caught in mowing equipment

Once a hydroseeding contractor has applied FGM it effectively acts to seal off the soil from the impact of rain and concentrated flows, to out performing erosion control blankets in rainfall simulation tests. Once applied the FGM is able to hold on to water and maintain air space, this results in superior and accelerated growth.

A combination of Thermally Refined® wood fibres, crimped man-made fibres and performance-enhancing additives form an interlocking matrix that creates air space and water-absorbing cavities to accelerate germination, reduce the impact of raindrop energy and minimize soil loss once hydroseeding is complete. After hydroseeding Water-resistant tackifiers and flocculants chemically bond the matrix to the soil surface, absorbing water and enabling superior vegetation establishment. Some FGM’s are able to achieve 98% effectiveness just 2 hours after hydroseeding and are proven to be 99% effective once cured.

As with BFM’s, Flexible Growth Mediums hydraulically using a range of hydroseeding equipment. This hydraulic application carries all of the cost saving benefits of hydroseeding and BFM products by keeping labour and ground preparation requirements minimal.

Recently Profile Products has introduced the new Flexterra high-performance, flexible growth medium (HP-FGM). This is designed to be used by hydroseeding contractors and is capable of achieving 600-percent greater initial seed germination and more than a 250-percent greater biomass than its predecessor, whilst being totally biodegradable.

The original Flexterra FGM, initially set the standard in the market and it was widely used by hydroseeding contractors; It led the march towards hydraulically applied techniques that could be delivered using hydraulic machinery.

Tests following EPA protocol concluded the product is completely safe for aquatic and terrestrial life forms and after hydroseeding it immediately bonds to the soil surface to reduce turbidity of runoff for up to 18 months.

These products have revolutionised the market and changed the direction of erosion control solutions from blankets towards hydroseeding and has strengthened the position of the hydroseeding contractor in the market place.

With all its beauty and freshness, spring brings many outdoor chores. One chore, a particular pleasure for Do-It-Yourselfers ( DIY), is sod installation. But, the sod and its installation is only the beginning. The new sod will need to be maintained to keep its luscious beauty and appeal. Hence, a good lawnmower will become your go-to outdoor spring tool for keeping your lawn magnificently manicured. Here are some tips that will help you get the most out of your lawnmower and newly installed sod.

1. Change the oil in the motor

Find a container wide enough to drain all the old oil.

Remove the dipstick from the casing so that it is not completely detached but will allow air into the crankcase. Because of the aeration, the crankcase can be drained quickly.

Find the oil drain plug situated in the lower part of mower. Place the oil-change container directly below this plug.

Now hold the plug with the vice grips and remove it quickly. The old oil will drain out of the motor and into the container.

Replace the plug again when there is no more oil to be drained. Ensure that the plug set tightly and is leak proof

Remove the dipstick completely and pour the new oil into the crankcase. Pour 1/2 to 1 quart of oil depending on the size of the engine. Check the manufacturers directions on your single motor oil container.

Clean the dipstick with a clean rag and replace it into the crankcase to measure the quantity of new oil. If you pour too much oil into the case by mistake, then remove the plug again and drain out the excess oil.

2. Care for the blades

Check if blades have to be replaced. Bent blades can neither be made sharp or straight; they have to be replaced

Sharpen the blades. You can take your lawnmower or just blades to a local hardware supplier to have blades sharpened. If you choose to sharpen the blades yourself using a file, keep the file at the same angle as the blades. Blunt blades will not cut your new sod evenly.

3. Lubricate the mower’s parts. Keep pulleys, wheel bearings and joints well lubricated. The lawnmower is a machine, made up of moving parts, so WD-40 is an essential commodity to have on hand.

4. Give lawnmower a good cleaning

Remove pieces of stray grass that are attached to the blade or found on or in other parts of the mower; A leaf blower is a handy tool for such a cleaning chore.

Replace the air filter. Your local hardware supply store will carry replacement air filters.

Replace the spark plug. You can find a spark plug for under $5 at almost any car parts supplier.

5. Set the lawnmower at its highest mowing height during early spring. Depending on the variety of your new sod, you can adjust the lawnmower height after the first few cuts.

When you are ready for your next spring sod installation project, make sure to review expert advice from Sod Atlanta and prepare your lawnmower for all the Spring and Summer mowing it will need to do. Your lawnmower plays an essential part in maintaining your home’s turf. The better it operates, the easier your new home lawn maintenance will be.

If you are installing new grass on a plot, or simply looking to start over in your landscape, you are looking to have the right lawn for your money. This is why it is important that you have the right sod. Making sure you have the right sod means paying attention to the area that you live in and the growing conditions which are best for each kind of grass. This will allow the sod to not only look great when you install it, but years from now when you are still enjoying the great look of the lawn.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda is a grass which is well known in the southern states. This is because of the propensity for the grass to grow well in hot climates with a lot of sun exposure. This is not the best grass to install if there are a lot of trees on the property which will block out the sun. If you have a wide open lawn which will soak up a lot of sun, you will be able to enjoy lush green grass. This is a perfect grass for areas which will see a lot of use. This is because it is a durable grass that will stand up to abuse. This is why it is used often in parks and playgrounds.

Tall Fescue

Tall Fescue is a great grass for temperate climates. This is because it grows well whether the winters get really cold or the summers get really hot. You will be able to maintain the grass year after year with little effort. This is another kind of grass which works well in high traffic areas. It is not as lush in green color as some of the other types, but it will remain greener longer and in a wider range of climates. This grass also stands up to drought well.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky Bluegrass is one of the thickest and lushest of the grasses available. This is a grass which is best suited to the Northern climates. It is designed to grow well no matter whether you will be planting in shade or in the sun. This is because the sod farmers will use a mix of different strains of Kentucky Bluegrass to allow it to flourish no matter where it is laid. This grass will need much more water in the summer months to maintain the lush green color.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is another grass which is well suited to the southern states. This is a preferred grass by many in industrial areas because it is resistant to weeds. While it does not stand up well to high traffic due to week root structure, it still looks good. This is perfectly suited to the professional environment where people are discouraged from walking on the lawns and it is merely decorative.

There are many more kinds of grass and sod that you can choose from. The best idea to make sure you are getting the right sod for your needs is to contact a professional so they can analyze your area and your needs.

You see when it comes to a decision on which way to go it's really a easy choice, and Ill tell you why. Seed requires lots of time and money. Sod only has the cost to get it and then you have an instant lawn.

You see when it comes to a decision on which way to go it’s really a easy choice, and Ill tell you why.

A) When you seed the prep work is very important. You need to get the area free from rocks, leveled, and weeds picked out by hand. And also all dirt clods need disposed of. Then its time to put in (starter) fertilizer, and put it down by hand, broadcasting it like you were feeding chickens.

B) Check your sprinklers that you have coverage in all areas of where the seed will go. I like to put out tuna cans in different areas to see after I run the sprinklers there’s water in the cans this will help in making adjustments where you need them.

C) Seed prep is very important. I like to get a 5 gal. bucket and put 2 cups seed to 4 gal. of sand and mix well with my hands. You can add a small amount of water to help the mix process. Then take the mix and broadcast it evenly to assure proper coverage. The sand is to help the seed stick better to the dirt and not let wind blow seeds away or let birds eat the seed.

D) After the seed is down water and water good almost never letting ground dry until you have germination.

E) When seed begins to grow you will see any weak areas that need more seed, put some seed down and be very light footed while doing so. Remember any steps or marks you make in the soil will be there when you get your lawn to grow. Start backing off on the watering duration until you can mow and walk on lawn with out hurting it.

F) When seed is tall and begins to get seeds at the tip put your mower on high level and mow the lawn. Do not bag the clippings it helps to turf build for at least the first 4-6 times.

G) Now is the time to hit it again with starter fertilizer. When you put down sod you level ground, put down sod and water, in 2-3 weeks you have a lawn area ready to mow and play on.

The comparison is a easy conclusion.

Rake
Petrol Hedgetrimmer
Lawn Scarifier
Shovel
Clippers

When the summer months end, the cooler air begins to set in and many plants begin to die in the cooler temperature. This isn’t a result of the care you are providing. It is just part of the natural cycle. During this time it is essential that you dispose of the weeds and dead plant matter that begin to fill up your garden. Once you have taken your petrol hedgetrimmer over the hedges, take the lawn scarifier and take it across your lawn. This will help to pull up the matter that lies as the base of your lawn.

Once you have taken the time to trim up and pull up the dead grass and moss from the base, take the time to sew more seeds in the lawn. As the spring rolls around the new growth will give you a remarkable looking lawn, and will help to prevent you from having bare patches.

Go through your garden and begin to pull weeds and spray weed killer where they were. During the winter months many types of weeds can continue to grow. By spraying the section with a good weed killer, you are able to end the problem before they begin again.

While you are weeding, make sure you remove dead growth as well. Many plants that die won’t come back the following year. Check with the local nursery to see which plants you own will come back in the spring, and which ones will need to be replanted when the time comes.

If you own a greenhouse, this is also the perfect time to start cleaning it up for the winter. Since there won’t be much use for it, you might not spend any time in here, and vermin will find it the perfect quiet place to nest. Keep areas neat and in order, when possible, keep pots and other dark surroundings up off the ground to discourage nesting.

When you have this taken care of, you will need to move on to the next important step. Christmas plants should be planted during this time, as they will hit peak bloom right around the Holiday. These will range from a variety of winter flowers that can handle the frigid cold temperatures that occur here in the United Kingdom. During this time you can also plant bulbs for the upcoming spring as well.

Even after you have completed all this, you will need to continue your focus on maintaining your garden as the month progresses. As the leaves begin to fall, rake them up and keep your yard clean from their clutter. Your roses will need to be cut back, but don’t do that until the blooms have started to wither. This might occur late in the month.

Your yard had the potential for being beautiful all year. Keep an eye on it and take action when you notice something looks a little off. Occasional maintenance is the best solution to avoid a long grueling day of yard work. Just remember to put up your petrol hedgetrimmer and lawn scarifier when you are done.

For those people – and those who simply like something that is a bit different than their neighbors – there are plenty of alternatives to having a backyard full of grass. Here are some of the most popular.

Crushed Stone – Crushes stone comes in a number of different shapes, sizes and colors, is easy to install and is virtually maintenance free. It also creates a very uniform surface, making it ideal for outdoor dining or lounging areas.

Pavers – Pavers, whether they are made from stone, terracotta or concrete, are very versatile and can be used to create almost any kind of landscape. Uniform shapes and sizes are great for creating a rather formal look while irregular pieces can be used to create a casual walkway or informal dining area.

Pavers can even be added to an existing lawn by simply having areas of the turf removed and the pavers positioned to create an attractive checkerboard look. For this kind of project though you may want to call in a professional landscaper to make sure the pavers are laid correctly.

Shredded Bark – Shredded bark is an economical and very popular way to give your backyard a makeover. You can just lay a weed cloth on top of the ground, then spread a thick layer of shredded bark on top to create a rather enchanting “woodland” look. The bark will wear down over time but all you need to do is replenish it with a new bag!

River Stones – Want to add a feeling of zen to your backyard? River stones are a great way to do that. The surface they create is, of course, not that even, so they may not be the best choice for a walkway.

Brick – Brick adds a great deal of rather rustic charm to even the smallest garden and if you like the look of a crisp edge for your garden, use brick. Set on its side, it makes a great edge. And, because of the small size of bricks, you can accomplish elegant curves as well.

Making raised beds with modest means. Low cost and low maintenance, to grow your own fresh delicious veggies. Just read on and see how easy it is.

How to make a raised bed garden, if your space is limited, or you just want to garden on a smaller scale.

In a raised bed you can plant the vegetables that you like the most. Make it so convenient, that when you are cooking or preparing your salads, just step out of your kitchen and take a few vegetables or pinch off a few leaves of this and that and go back in and get ready to eat the freshest vegetables possible. They can not get any fresher than that!

If you love herbs, build you a little Herb raised bed garden, and enjoy the best and freshest aroma and flavour you can imagine.

Making the raised beds is not complicated and it should not be expensive. You probably have some lumber and other materials laying around in your yard or barn, or somewhere along the fence in your back yard.

A few 2x6x8 or 10 or 12, it depends on how much space you have and how long you want to make them.

The ideal width would be no larger than 4 feet, so you can reach easily from all sides. That is when you build the beds rectangular shape. You can make them in circles or triangles if you want to.

Here is an example of a raised bed that I made from some scrap lumber, and I did not want to cut, just adapted the bed to the size of the material. Sometimes it works like that, and sometimes you cut it to the desired size.

Just select a nice sunny spot, (a little partial shade is not going to hurt) the sunnier the better. Nail the boards together in the corners, like a frame. If you place the bed directly on a grassy spot, and you do not want to remove the sod, place some cardboard or news papers on top of the grass.

Now it is time to put the soil in the bed. If you have some good rich top soil, that is good. If you do not have any top soil or the means to transport it from the garden supply place, like a solid trailer, you can use ground pine bark. It is much lighter and it works just as well if not better.

That is what I use in my raised beds as well as in all my pot planting, and in my propagation by rooted cuttings, which I will talk about in an other article.

On a bed of the size of 4×10 mix into the pine bark about 4 bags of 50 pound well composted cow manure, and a few handfuls of organic fertilizer. Mix it well and level the soil. Now you are ready to plant.

Consider on what side of your property is the sun rising, and plant accordingly, so that the taller growing plants are not going to cast a shade on the lower growing ones. Like the tomatoes that are growing taller, should be planted towards the west side of the bed, and the lettuce and spinach on the east size.

When choosing the location of the raised beds, make sure they are close to a water spigot, to make it easy to water.

As for the choosing of the vegetables is a matter of what you like the most. Here are some ideas: tomatoes, bell peppers, sweet banana peppers, hot peppers, (just make sure not to plant the hot peppers close to the sweet ones to avoid cross pollination and make them all hot), cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, radish, squash, etc.

For the cucumbers, if you will notice on the left bed in the picture, I nailed two thin boards on the ends of the bed, and tied a fence wire mesh, for the cucumbers to climb on. This will save a lot of space.

If you like herbs, to spice up your cooking and your salads, make a separate herb bed. You can plant parsley, dill, basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, garlic chives, onion chives, sage, peppermint, etc.

Herbs can be planted by seeds directly in your raised garden or you can start them indoors in some 3 or 4 inch pots, then when the danger of late frost is over, take them out of the pots with the soil undisturbed, and plant them in the garden. This way you will have an early start.

Watering: The drip irrigation is a better solution, instead of over head sprinkling. If drip irrigation is not affordable, water around the plants to get the water to the roots.

Keep an eye on those pesky weeds, and pluck them out as soon as you see them. Other than that, there is not much to cultivate in a raised bed, just watch them growing and enjoy the fruits of your “easy” labour.

Another thing to watch is the caterpillars, that you can control by removing them instead of using pesticides. You do not want to poison your body, do you?

So, as you can see, a raised bed gardening is not hard to make at all! If you love nature and you want to have some good quality preoccupation in the tranquility of your little paradise, go for it! You will be glad you did!

If you enjoyed this post I invite you to come back soon, as I am dedicated to post more information and related articles for the gardening enthusiasts, and anyone who is contemplating to garden, be it for a hobby, convenience, or just to forget about the troubles of the world.

With sod, it used to be that you just took what Mother Nature gave you. Today, you have a lot more choices. But before you pick out the one that best catches your eye, there are some considerations which you cannot ignore. Do you live in a heavily shaded area? Does the sun beat down 24/7? How much use will the sod get out of family barbecues, camping out under the stars, or neighborhood wiffleball games? Knowing the answers to these questions will ultimately determine which of the following is the best sod for you:

Marathon Sod is well suited for the soils and climates in Southern California. It’s roots grow up to five times deeper than other varieties of sods, such as Bluegrass. Marathon Sod has such an extensive root system that it can tolerate extreme heat while using less water.

Purpleblue is a high quality blend that is dense in nature. Therefore, it provides an elegant appearance. It thrives in moderate coastal areas and do not do well in warm dry climates. Maintenance wise, it requires regular care. Purpleblue remains green throughout the entire year.

Ryeblue sod is very similar to Purpleblue in terms of characteristics. However, it contains 20% perennial rye, which makes it more resistant to disease. It also appears in a lighter shade of green.

Besides evergreen sod, you can also consider winter dormant varieties such as Dichondra sod as well as St. Augustine sod. Dichondra sod is more ideal for shady areas, while St. Augustine sod is coarse and more suitable for non-shady areas.

If you have a lot of clay or sandy soil types lying around, then you may wish to consider Zoysia sod on account of its low maintenance ways. Resilient and resistant when it comes to weeds, you will do a lot less edging with this choice.

Preparing the Ground

Get your shovels, wheel barrow, and rake. It’s time to level and till. Get rid of the rocks and weeds as best you can before you start.

Installation

Lay the strips of sod end to end. Make sure it is flat and gives off the appearance of connection so that there are no gaps in between the strips.

Care

The sun will usually take care of its end of the bargain, but it’s your job to keep up with the weather and water accordingly. Extremely hot climates may require several hours of water per day. Cool and moist areas are easier to handle. The most important thing is not to take the sod for granted. Don’t expect Mother Nature to do all the work.
