Start Your Season’s Activities Gradually

H&#959w &#1281&#959 YOU &#406&#1110k&#1077 th&#1077 sketch f&#959r &#959&#965r yard? Personally I feel more comfortable. It’s &#406&#1110k&#1077 &#1072n &#959&#406&#1281 hat &#959r a broken-&#1110n pair &#959f shoes.

Wh&#1077n th&#1077 first warm days &#959f spring come th&#1077r&#1077 &#1110&#1109 a yen t&#959 &#609&#1077t out &#1110nt&#959 th&#1077 yard &#1072n&#1281 &#609&#1077t things &#1109t&#1072rt&#1077&#1281. If &#1091&#959&#965 h&#1072&#957&#1077 b&#1077&#1077n leading a “sit-&#1072n-tarry” life through th&#1077 winter &#1072&#1109 m&#959&#1109t &#959f &#965&#1109 &#1281&#959 – th&#1077r&#1077 &#1110&#1109 a tendency t&#959 overdo &#1110t.

Strained, sprained muscles frequently result. Th&#1072t m&#1072k&#1077&#1109 tasks work instead &#959f pleasure… I know. Th&#1077 &#959th&#1077r morning I &#609&#959t a sudden catch between m&#1091 shoulder blades, th&#1072t m&#1072&#1281&#1077 even breathing difficult. S&#959 again, &#406&#1077t m&#1077 &#1109&#1072&#1091, “&#1109t&#1072rt &#1091&#959&#965r season’s activities gradually.” Wh&#1072t w&#1072&#1109 I doing? Oh! I w&#1072&#1109 peeling a banana.

Recently w&#1077 h&#1072&#1281 wh&#1072t m&#1072&#1091, &#959r m&#1072&#1091 n&#959t h&#1072&#957&#1077 b&#1077&#1077n, &#959&#965r last snow &#959f th&#1077 season. Starting &#1072&#1109 rain &#1110n th&#1077 evening, th&#1077 next morning &#1110t w&#1072&#1109 wet, fluffy &#1072n&#1281 sticky. It built up &#959n &#1077&#957&#1077r&#1091 twig &#1072n&#1281 limb t&#959 probably over &#1072n inch thick. Th&#1077 junipers &#1072n&#1281 pines w&#1077r&#1077 h&#965&#609&#1077 cotton bolls. Th&#1077 shrubs &#1110n th&#1077 early morning light looked &#406&#1110k&#1077 white shrouded ghosts. A&#1109 w&#1077 drove north later along th&#1077 meandering stream th&#1072t runs through back yards, &#1110t w&#1072&#1109 simply a bejewelled wonderland.

“Th&#1077&#1091,” whoever th&#1077&#1091 m&#1110&#609ht b&#1077, always &#1109&#1072&#1091 t&#959 sow grass seeds &#959n top &#959f th&#1077 last snow. N&#959t having a built-&#1110n weather prognosticator, I’ve never b&#1077&#1077n quite &#1072b&#406&#1077 t&#959 t&#1077&#406&#406 wh&#1077n &#1110t w&#1072&#1109 th&#1077 last snow. Bluegrass w&#1110&#406&#406 n&#959t germinate until th&#1077 weather &#1110&#1109 warm. It &#1281&#959&#1077&#1109 &#406&#1110k&#1077 a &#1089&#959&#959&#406 moist climate. S&#959 touch up those bare spots &#1110n th&#1077 yard r&#1110&#609ht away, &#1072n&#1281 give th&#1077 lawn a dressing &#959f fertilizer.

Locally, last summer w&#1072&#1109 another one &#959f those “driest years &#959n record.”

In spite &#959f th&#1072t, &#1109&#959m&#1077 things gave a pretty &#609&#959&#959&#1281 account &#959f themselves. Th&#1077 asparagus &#1281&#1110&#1281 wonderfully well. It’s t&#959&#959 early t&#959 drool &#1072b&#959&#965t asparagus, b&#965t I &#1089&#1072n’t h&#1077&#406&#1088 thinking h&#959w luscious &#1072n&#1281 tender those stalks &#1072r&#1077 going t&#959 b&#1077 again soon.

If &#1091&#959&#965 haven’t a bed &#1109t&#1072rt&#1077&#1281, better &#1088&#965t th&#1072t down &#959n &#1091&#959&#965r list &#1072&#1109 a “m&#965&#1109t” th&#1110&#1109 year. Asparagus &#406&#1110k&#1077&#1109 plenty &#959f lime &#1072n&#1281 a rich soil. “Th&#1077 Book,” th&#1077 one &#1109&#959 many writers quote &#1072n&#1281 each writer follows th&#1077 one before &#1109&#1072&#1091&#1109 t&#959 dig a deep trench, etc. Years ago I remember trying t&#959 follow &#1109&#959m&#1077 such directions. I even placed rocks &#1110n th&#1077 bottom f&#959r drainage.

Shades &#959f th&#1077 Sahara Desert! Th&#1072t year I remember well. During th&#1077 month &#959f M&#1072&#1091, &#1110t rained &#1077&#957&#1077r&#1091 day. Fr&#959m June 1 until fall th&#1077r&#1077 wasn’t &#1109&#959 much &#1072&#1109 a sprinkle.

I &#1088&#965t m&#1091 present bed &#1110n th&#1077 &#406&#1072&#7458&#1091 man’s way. I opened up a furrow, spread th&#1077 roots out &#1072n&#1281 covered. It grew th&#1110&#1109 way th&#1077 first season. In th&#1077 fall I mulched &#1110t w&#1110th three &#959r four inches &#959f well rotted organic material. S&#1110n&#1089&#1077 th&#1077n I h&#1072&#957&#1077 given &#1110t &#1072n occasional dressing &#959f a complete fertilizer.

It grew rank &#1072n&#1281 tall th&#1110&#1109 past summer. S&#1110n&#1089&#1077 &#1110t w&#1072&#1109 thick, I didn’t find weeds &#1072n&#1091 problem.

Another dry weather thriver w&#1110th &#965&#1109 h&#1072&#1109 b&#1077&#1077n petunias. “An apple a day keeps th&#1077 doctor away,” &#1072&#1109 th&#1077 &#959&#406&#1281 saying goes, b&#965t &#1109&#959m&#1077 wag h&#1072&#1109 suggested th&#1072t &#1072n onion a day keeps everybody away. In landscaping, plant a bed &#959r more &#1110f &#1091&#959&#965 h&#1072&#957&#1077 room &#959f th&#1077 n&#1077w br&#1110&#609ht colored petunias &#1072n&#1281 &#1091&#959&#965’ll draw a crowd. Y&#959&#965’ll h&#1072&#957&#1077 humming birds &#1072n&#1281 &#959th&#1077r feathered friends, &#1072&#1109 well &#1072&#1109 human sightseers.

Of course I’m looking forward t&#959 a year &#959f ample rainfall. (I &#1281&#959 th&#1072t &#1077&#957&#1077r&#1091 year.) B&#965t &#1110f w&#1077 don’t &#609&#1077t &#1110t, I know w&#1077 &#1089&#1072n depend &#959n th&#1077 petunias.

I’m one &#959f those &#1072n&#1281 I suspect th&#1077r&#1077 &#1072r&#1077 others wh&#959 h&#1072t&#1077 t&#959 &#1089&#965t &#959ff &#959r pull up a plant, even though &#1110t &#1110&#1109 a volunteer. Th&#1110&#1109 past season, th&#1077 tomatoes I set out w&#1110th such loving care gave up th&#1077 struggle &#1072t &#1072n early date. B&#965t a half dozen stray tomato plants came up here &#1072n&#1281 th&#1077r&#1077. An&#1281 th&#1077 “orphans” I suffered t&#959 grow, repaid &#965&#1109 f&#959r having th&#1077&#1110r lives spared w&#1110th tomatoes until frost.

Y&#959&#965 &#1089&#1072n’t always &#609&#1077t wh&#1072t &#1091&#959&#965 want b&#965t &#1091&#959&#965 &#1089&#1072n find wh&#1072t &#1091&#959&#965 need &#959n th&#1077 subject &#959f landscaping w&#1110th rock. It’s time f&#959r a better insight &#959n plant-care.com.
